Organization Overview:

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments focusing on 420 counties across the Appalachian Region. Responsibilities:

ARC seeks a compelling storyteller to serve as our lead writer and editor for ARC and the Region. Working with the Content Strategist and communications team, this position will coordinate, develop, and produce content such as press releases, web material, e-newsletters, speeches, and other materials to amplify ARC’s mission and strategy. The Content Writer will collaborate with ARC staff, federal office, states, grantees, partners, and others to source relevant material for public dissemination. This position reports to the Director, Communications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in the public sector strategic communications producing innovative written materials and in inspiring interest from those interested in the organization’s activities, programs, and events; demonstrated ability to develop content with creative presentation
  • Strong writing skills in both proactive and reactive situations; professional experience researching and developing original content across a variety of public messaging platforms; effective ability to develop content with short turn-around time
  • Experience in researching, gathering and applying data and information to support specific communications requirements, usually to inform, instruct, or engage audiences
  • Core competencies: accountability, adaptability, collaboration, communication, critical analysis
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment and bring an energetic and innovative approach to his or her work
  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher degree in a related field
  • Successful completion (prior to hire) and maintenance of background security review
  • Ability to travel (~25%)

ARC generally follows the General Schedule Salary Table of the Federal government.  ARC’s grades denoted by “NF” are equivalent to the federal grade(s) on the GS chart.
